It is not strange that Aphloia is called Bark-changer. This tree is capable of renewing and repairing its bark in an amazing way, enabling it to grow quickly. It contains a second exceptional property as well, it can resist the damaging effects of ultra-violet rays. High doses of this sun ray, particularly intense around the equator, damages botanical tissue by destroying its cells’ DNA. But, the Aphloia possesses a remedy called Aphloiol at the heart of its leaves. This powerful, natural molecule protects the plant against oxidation and gives it more resistance to external aggressions.
Origins of the plant
Aphloia is abundant in the High Lands of Madagascar, especially in the dense, humid forests up to 2000 meters high. It can often be found on the hills of the high plains, the slopes, by the roads and pathways and generally around the edges of forests. 80% of the local pickers are women and during the rainy season, between October and April only, they delicately separate the leaves by hand to encourage their regrowth. There are several sites for the harvest, including Mahisty, 30km from the capital, Antananarivo. The Yves Rocher Brand is financially co-committed with its partner, in the development of an industrial site. This will enable the latter to transform the plants into extracts locally. It is a way of increasing the advantages created in Madagascar and in consequence, the means of helping the environment and local populations.
